Training for a trek from a city means most of the work happens indoors, and at some point you stand in the gym and wonder whether any of it is landing. Stairmaster vs incline treadmill vs the one hill within driving distance: which of these is actually preparing you for the trail?

Partly, all of them. And the part they miss is the part that hurts. Here is what each of the three builds, what each leaves out, and how to combine them.

The Stairmaster: the vertical gain machine

What it builds: climbing volume. Stepping up against gravity is the motion of ascent, so of everything in the gym the Stairmaster is the closest thing to the work your legs and lungs do on a long climb. It’s measurable, it’s weatherproof, and it gets better with a loaded pack on your back.

What it skips: three things. First, there is no down. The machine gives you infinite ascent and zero descent, which means none of the braking, muscle-lengthening work that breaks untrained hikers. Second, every step is the same height. On a trail no two steps match in height, angle, or surface, and that variety is exactly what your ankles and balance need to rehearse. Third, the handrails. Put your bodyweight through them and you have offloaded a chunk of the work plus all of the balance demand. Hands off, or fingertips at most.

The incline treadmill: the sustained grade simulator

What it builds: long, steady, controllable uphill. Set 10 to 15 percent and walk for an hour and you have a closer match to the grinding grade of a big trekking day than stairs can give you, with precise control over progression week to week. Real hills: all of it at once

What they build: everything. A real hill trains the climb, then forces the descent, on uneven ground, in weather, with the ankle stability, foot placement, and balance reflexes that no machine provides. One hill session with a pack covers in a single outing what takes three separate gym sessions to approximate, and it includes the part the gym cannot do at all. If hills exist within reach of you, they are not one option among three. They’re the anchor, and the machines are how you accumulate volume between visits.

What they skip: convenience. Weather, daylight, drive time, and for flat cities, existence. Which is the whole reason this article exists.

Real hills win on specificity and are irreplaceable for descent and terrain. The incline treadmill wins for long aerobic base building. The Stairmaster wins for concentrated climbing strength-endurance. Then the tiebreaker: the tool you’ll use 3 times a week beats the better tool you use twice a month.

But look at what even the perfect gym combination still skips: the way down and the uneven ground. If your training is machine-based, add both on purpose. Slow step-downs and eccentric leg work in your strength sessions. Real stairwells walked down under a pack. Every scrap of uneven ground your city has, curbs and gravel and park trails included. And before any big trip, test yourself against something real, because a machine reports the work you did on the machine and nothing about the footing or the descent.

The machines will build your engine. They will not teach your legs to brake or your ankles to cope with rock. That part is on you, and it belongs in the same week as the machine work.
