Summit day is bigger than anything a trek asked of you.
You’ve done the long loaded days. Summit day is a different category: a 1am start, thousands of feet of gain under a full pack, and then all of it back down on legs that are already spent. The summit is the halfway point, and whatever you have left when you get there is the entire budget for the harder half. This 10-week plan builds the strength, loaded climbing power and engine for non-technical glaciated peaks and entry alpine summits: Rainier, Baker, Mont Blanc, Aconcagua, and the volcanoes of Mexico, Ecuador and Bolivia.
IS THIS YOU?
- You’ve done a big trek and assumed a glaciated peak is just a harder version of it.
- Your guide company published a fitness standard, and you’re not sure you’d meet it today.
- You’ll be roped to other people, and your pace becomes their pace.
- You can already handle a long, loaded day on the trail, and you want more.
- You’re eyeing non-technical peaks: Rainier, Baker, Mont Blanc, Aconcagua, the volcanoes of Mexico, Ecuador, and Bolivia.
- You’ve finished the Trekking Fitness Plan, or you’re an experienced trekker stepping onto glaciers.
WHAT YOU’LL BE READY FOR
- Big vertical gain under a full pack.
- Long summit pushes, when your legs have to keep climbing past tired.
- The long descent, with knees that hold up.
- A heavier load than a daypack, carried for hours.
WHAT’S INCLUDED
- 10-week plan, 5 days a week, in two progressive blocks.
- Two strength days built around the legs, hips, and descent durability the mountains demand.
- A long aerobic day, a loaded climb with vertical gain, and a summit-day endurance session.
- A no-mountain option for every vertical session, so terrain is never the blocker.
- A video for every movement.
- This is a new plan. The coaching behind it is the same as the 8-Week Trekking Fitness Plan, which is rated 4.96 from 23 reviews.
WORTH KEEPING IN MIND
A guided climb on a peak like this costs thousands before you count boots, crampons and an axe. The training is the cheapest line on the whole trip, and the only one that decides whether you’re still making good decisions at the turnaround hour.
Arrive with reserves and the turnaround is a choice. Arrive empty and it has already been made for you.
WHICH PLAN IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
- Already handle long loaded days and ready to step onto glaciers? You’re in the right place.
- Training for a first big trek, or newer to long days on trail? Start with the Trekking Fitness Plan.
A NOTE ON WHERE YOU’RE STARTING
This is a step up in what you’re training for, not in general fitness. A strong gym background doesn’t carry you up a glaciated peak on its own. This plan builds the mountain-specific strength and endurance the objective demands. Most guide services want you preparing for months, not weeks. Ten weeks is the focused block, so start it now to build a base, then do it again in the ten weeks before you fly and go in stronger the second time.
Not sure yet? Try a week of it.
